What Spent So Far is
Spent So Far answers one question: what did I actually spend this month? It adds up your bank and card transactions on your iPhone, leaves out card bills and money moving between your own accounts, and shows where the money went. There's no account and no sign-in, and your numbers stay on your iPhone. You can try it with sample data, connect your bank through SimpleFIN, or import a copy you exported earlier.
Contact
Write to [email protected]. It helps to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, and the app version shown at the bottom of Settings.
Never send us your SimpleFIN setup token, your bank password, or an export file. We don't need them to help, and we'd rather not hold them.
Spent So Far is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Questions
How do I connect my bank?
Spent So Far gets your transactions through SimpleFIN Bridge, a separate service that connects to banks and card issuers. Set up a SimpleFIN account, add your bank there under Financial Institutions, then go to Apps, choose New Connection and Create Setup Token, and copy the token. In Spent So Far, tap Connect your bank, then I have my setup token, paste it and tap Connect. The first sync reaches back about three months. You sign in to your bank on SimpleFIN's site, so Spent So Far never sees your bank password, and the connection can read transactions but can't move money. Spent So Far isn't affiliated with SimpleFIN and doesn't charge for anything.
Which banks does it work with?
Any that SimpleFIN Bridge connects to, which includes many banks and cards in the US and Canada. Search for your bank on SimpleFIN's site before you set anything up.
Does my bank allow this?
Check first. Some banks' account agreements restrict sharing account access with third-party services, and may limit their fraud protection if you do. Read your bank's terms before you connect. Spent So Far only ever reads your data. It can't move money.
My setup token doesn't work
A setup token works once. When you tap Connect, Spent So Far trades it for a lasting connection, and the token stops working. If connecting failed partway, or you're setting up again, create a new token in SimpleFIN under Apps, New Connection, Create Setup Token, and paste that one.
Why didn't it refresh?
Banks usually update their data once or twice a day, and SimpleFIN allows only a few requests a day for each connection. Spent So Far spaces out its requests to keep your connection in good standing, and tells you when you can refresh again.
What is the sample data?
Three months of made-up spending by a household in Toronto, so you can see how everything works before you connect anything. Tap Try it with sample data on the first screen. While it's open, Summary, Transactions and To confirm say Sample data at the top. Changes you make to the sample are kept apart from your own numbers. From the Sample data menu, or the Sample data section in Settings, you can reset the sample, leave it, or connect your bank.
How do I move my data to another iPhone or to the web app?
Use a copy. In Settings, choose Export a copy and save the file with the share sheet, for example to Files or with AirDrop. On the other iPhone, choose Import a copy in Settings and pick the file. In the web app at spentsofar.com, sign in and use Import a copy under Settings, Data on this device. It works the other way too: Download a copy in the web app, then Import a copy on your iPhone. Importing replaces what's on that device. The file doesn't carry your SimpleFIN connection, so to keep the new copy up to date, reconnect there with a new setup token. The file isn't encrypted, so keep it private and delete it when you're done.
How do I disconnect my bank?
In Settings, open Bank connection and choose Disconnect bank. Spent So Far forgets the connection on this iPhone and keeps your numbers so far. To stop SimpleFIN's access for good, turn off Spent So Far in your SimpleFIN account, under Apps.
How do I delete my data?
In Settings, choose Delete everything from this iPhone. That removes your transactions, your changes, changes to the sample and the SimpleFIN connection. Deleting the app removes them too. We hold no copy, so this can't be undone. Export files you saved are yours to delete wherever you put them. The privacy page has the details.
Do I need an account?
No. The iPhone app has no account and no sign-in, and it sends nothing to us.
